James Gunn Seemingly Confirmed as Superman: Legacy Director

A new interview with DC Studios’ creative committee features DC Comics writer Tom King referring to James Gunn, the director of Superman: Legacy.

James Gunn could be seen stepping in front of the camera to direct Superman Legacy after he has finished writing the script.

In a YouTube interview, DC comic book writer Tom King mentioned Gunn as the director and writer of the upcoming Superman feature. King stated that there is a lot I can talk about and a lot I cannot when it comes to DC Studios’ creative committee. James Gunn is super smart and super creative. He is the director and writer of Superman, and he is the creative force behind everything, Peter Safran and him. He reached out to me and a group of screenwriters, incredible, and fantastic… to help him make these TV shows and movies as great as possible.

Gunn claims that development on Superman was initiated in mid-2022 by Warner Bros. The script was written by Gunn, but it wasn’t officially announced until December 2022. The project, it will follow Clark Kent as he was a young man at the Daily Planet. Although Gunn has been confirmed to be writing the film, the filmmaker was reportedly still unsure if he would also be directing.

The New Superman Takes Flight

Details about Superman’s Legacy are being kept secret, but Gunn describes his version of the Man of Steel as “a big old galoot” and is thought to have been loosely inspired by Grant Morrison’s fan-favorite All-Star Superman. Gunn indicated that Superman: Legacy was not an adaptation of Morrison’s work. Gunn also dismissed rumors that Superman had a son and dissented others who suggested the Big Blue Boy Scout would be 25. Gunn stated that the claim of Superman having a son in February “keeps getting repeated” but that he never made it. “I never said that Superman was older than he was in his 40s, and Batman might be a few years older than Superman,” Gunn stated.

Recently, the DC Studios boss revealed that Warner Bros. While Discovery offered him, Superman before he chose to take on the Suicide Squad. He added, “A few decades later, I saw how to deal with Superman [and] took the challenge on.” The Man of Steel isn’t the only survivor of Krypton who could join the new DCU. Gunn and his team are also working to bring Kara Zor-El into the fray with Supergirl, Woman of Tomorrow. This film is based on King’s comic book storyline. Woman of Tomorrow has not been released yet. It is also unknown if Flash‘s Sasha Calle will be reprising the role in the upcoming solo movie.

Superman Legacy will be in theaters on July 11, 2025.
